IELTS Speaking Part 1 Band 9 Model Answers – Topic: Maps

1. When you used map for the first time?

To the best of my recollection, the first time I got hold of a map was when I had a visit to [a state/city]. At that time I was living in another state so I didn’t know inside out about the road networks there, which led me to buy a paper map in case I got lost in the middle of nowhere.

2. How often do you use map?

On a daily basis, I guess. I am a fan of Google map, and it helps me navigate better, especially to some locations I haven’t been to. When my friends ask me to a certain food stall to have a drink, I simply enter the locations and a few seconds later, detailed directions are provided, which makes finding the location a piece of cake.

3. Do you prefer to use electronic map or paper map? Which one is convenient for you?

Well, I reckon that almost no one would use a paper map as smartphones are often equipped with electronic maps. Google Maps has transformed the way we look for directions, which is a life-saver and a thing we can’t live without.

4. Have you asked someone for direction?

Yes, I’d say. Maps have their limitation which is that they aren’t capable of leading us direct at the doorstep of someone’s house if someone lives in an alley. It’s a better choice if we ask a local at that neighborhood, which helps us find the location faster.

5. How do you find your way in an unfamiliar place?

Well, if I’ve got my phone on me and I have access to the internet, I’ll use Google Maps which will help me figure out how to get to where I wanna go. But if that’s not possible, I just ask around. You know, I might just walk into the nearest shop and ask the shopkeeper, cos they’re normally pretty familiar with the surrounding area.
