Well, the person I want to talk about today is my accounting teacher named Lucy who graduated from the University Sydney. Since 1 am going to continue my study in Australia and I do not know anything about studying abroad, I asked Lucy for help last month. Lucy was very patient and she gave me some professional suggestions about how to prepare for the application. Firstly, she told me that I needed to get a high score in the IELTS examination. Since I want to study in the University of Sydney and it is one of the best universities in Australia, the students need to have a good English skill if they want to study there.

Secondly, she suggested me to read some professional books about the accounting. Honestly speaking, this major is not very easy to learn. Lucy said that if I can make a good preparation before entering the school, I would definitely be a good student later on. As for my feeling about her help, I suppose that she can let me know a lot about my future life in Australia. She did not only tell me about the University of Sydney, but also tell me a lot about the colorful life while studying there. From her words, I learned that I could not only receive a professional education, but also attend many interesting programs and activities while studying for my master degree.

Part3

  1.    Do you like helping others?

Yes, I like helping others very much. Helping others makes me feel really happy. I’ve done a lot of volunteer work in the past few years and my experiences of helping others indeed enrich my life. Several years ago, as a volunteer in a Children’s Hospital, I brought a game called Flower to an autistic boy as a gift. I was surprised to see his smiling face when he was: playing the game. His parents told me with tears that they had never seen him smile like this before. I was deeply impresses by what positive changes that I could make to other people’s lives. I realized my value by providing other people with happiness and hope. Their smiling faces and laughter are my best rewards.

  1.    In your view, should children be taught to helping?

In my opinion, children should learn how to help others. Their parents should tell them the importance of helping others and how to help others. Children will become more considerate and caring by learning how to help others. In China, almost every family is required to have only one child. These children are usually spoiled by their parents and grandparents, and rarely care about other people’ s feelings. Their parents should pay special attention to their personal development and encourage them to help others instead of being selfish. By learning how to help others, children will become friendlier and be more popular among their classmates when they grow up.

  1.    How can we encourage children to help others?

There are many ways that we can encourage children to help others. First of all, we can give them some rewards if the) offer others help. For example, we can praise them for their kindness, and give them some gifts as rewards. Since children are more likely to repeat the kinds of behaviors that are rewarding, they will help others more frequently in the future Secondly, we can provide them with more chances to help others. As for parents, they can ask their kids to do some community services during holidays. As for teachers, they can organize some volunteer work and encourage their student to join in. For example, they can contact the school library to spare several positions for students.

  1.    Do you think people are less willing to help other these days, compared to the past (why?/why not?)

Yes, I think that people are less willing to help others these days compared to those in the past. Actually, it is not because people don’ t want to help others. Instead, people don’ t have the courage to help others. They are afraid of being cheated. Last month, I heard an astonishing piece of news. On Saturday afternoon, an old lady fell down when she walked in the park. A young man, who was riding a bike at that time, saw the old lady lying on the ground and got off his bike immediately to help her. However, the old lady yelled that this young man had knocked her down. She required that poor man to send her to the hospital and paid for the expensive medical fee. Such kinds of stories happen every day in China, and more and more people are afraid of helping strangers. They just don’ t want to get into big troubles.

  1.    Do people today trust others as much as they used to in the past?

As far as I’m concerned, people today trust others less than they do in the past. In the past, most Chinese people live in rural areas. People in the same village know each other well. My mom told me that they rarely closed their front doors while they were sleeping. People were always ready to help other families when they were in trouble. However, these won’ t happen today. More and more people are moving into the cities, and the gap between the rich and the poor is growing all the time

Some people are even not familiar with their neighbors, let alone trusting them.

  1.    How do people in your community help one another?

Usually, when people are in trouble, they will ask their neighbors for help. I still remember clearly that I forgot to bring my keys when I went back home last month. My parents were still working and would go back home several hours later. There was no place for me to go to, so I knocked my neighbor’s door and asked her if I could stay in her house for a while. She invited me to come in kindly, and handed me some delicious snacks. 1 felt really warm and happy that day. Sometimes when someone is facing big troubles, the whole community will stand together. For example, we will donate a lot of money for people who are seriously ill and need a lot of money for surgery.

  1.    How do students, such as high school students, help each other?

There are many ways that students help each other. Usually, they help each other with some academic problems. Nearly every student has a lot of trouble understanding what the teachers are talking about and how to solve some difficult problems in their homework. When I was in high school, I formed a study group. Everybody in the study group was willing to help others. We usually studied together in the school library, and discussed about all kinds of problems in the stud) rooms. Finally, we all received good grades in the final exams. Students can also help each other in other ways. One of my high school classmates, Anna, broke her leg one day. We all helped her do a lot of things when she was at school. For example, we bought her some water and we brought exercise books to her. Also, we did many other trivial things for her.

  1.    How can (or, do) charitable organizations help people?

Well, there are many ways that charitable organizations help people. Some charitable organizations can offer homeless people places to live in and provide them with delicious food when they are hungry. Some organizations can raise money for people who are seriously ill and need a huge amount of money for surgery. There are also many other organizations that can provide old people with pension and free health examination. Some special charitable organizations can also provide funds for cleft-lip fixing operations for the poor.

  1.    What are some examples of such organizations in your country?

The Red Cross Society of China is one of the biggest charitable organizations in my country. During hard time when Sichuan and Yushu earthquakes happened, the government allowed all kinds of groups to raise money, and officials always put the Red Cross on the front lines. Another famous one called Soong Ching Ling Foundation, a charity backed up by the Chinese government, usually raised money within China for education and health programs.

  1.    What do you think are the benefits of having unpaid volunteer workers?

Well, there are many benefits of having unpaid volunteer workers. First of all, activity organizers can save a lot of money ill this way. Last year, I worked as a volunteer in Shanghai International Marathon. There were more than two thousand volunteers that day. Just imagine how much money the organizers had to pay if they hired two thousand people to help their organize the marathon. Secondly, volunteers are usually more energetic and hardworking than hired people. Since they only do their work for a short period of time, everything is new and fresh for them.

  1.    How do you think the volunteers themselves benefits?

Well, volunteers can benefit a lot from their work. While they are doing their work, they can experience all kinds of lives that are totally different from their own. They can meet people with different backgrounds, which will definitely broader their horizon. They can also make friends with people who work with them. When I worked as a volunteer in the Children’ Í Hospital, I made friends with people who worked there, and had a wonderful time with them. Moreover, by doing volunteer work, people will feel much happier through helping others and can realize their value at the same time.
