Multi-cultural societies, in which there is a mixture of different ethnic peoples, bring more benefits than drawbacks to a country. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
Band 8 Model Answer:
I completely agree that Cosmopolitan (containing people and things from many different parts of the world) societies are better for the overall development of a country. That is why multicultural nations like the U.S.A., Australia, Canada enjoy great prosperity and stability. In the following paragraphs, I shall provide arguments to support my point of view.
Apparently, a multiethnic (consisting of, or relating to various different races) society can bring a wide range of (a lot of) benefits to a country in terms of economic, social and cultural development. To begin with, the vast majority of people are dynamic labor force (all the people who are of the right age to work) from different cultural backgrounds such as experts, engineers, businessmen and other well-trained people. This results in an inflow of expertise, investments, experience, which are the key factors to the increase of efficiency, competitiveness and productivity of a country’s economy.
What is more, the people from different cultures are well aware of the importance of respecting the local customs and traditions. Therefore, they collaborate well with the native people and work very harmoniously (in a friendly and peaceful way) side by side in factories, offices and schools. In addition, with a rich blend of peoples’ lifestyles and cultures in multi-cultural societies people tend to be more open-minded (willing to consider new or different ideas) and tolerant of (able to deal with something annoying and unpleasant) other people’s religions and customs.
In a nutshell, the advantages of multi-cultural societies far exceed (=overweigh) the disadvantages. That is the reason so many countries make great efforts to attract more immigrants from abroad.
