IELTS Writing Actual Test in September 2021 with Band 8 Model Answers

IELTS Writing Task 2:

Anybody can use a mobile phone to answer the work or personal calls at any time or 7 days a week. Does this development have more positive or negative effects on the individuals and society?

SAMPLE ESSAY BAND 8:

Phones are an essential commodity in today ‘s modern world. These devices allow people to answer calls for any social or personal reason at any moment, which I believe provides more advantages than disadvantages to the society and its people.

The great advantage of the phones and their use of taking calls is that these provide a means (=a method) to satisfy the basic human  need   of   interaction   with  others.  This allows people to stay connected with friends and family members across borders and continents. For example, students who enroll in oversea study programs can communicate with their families and friends via video calls, thus remain in constant contact, minimalizing their homesickness. Moreover, individuals can respond to urgent situations immediately with the help of phone calls and stay close to people they care about in dire circumstance (situations or events that cause great fear and worry). Consequently, all individuals can stay interconnected with one another further resulting in a close-knit (tightly connected, united or organized) society.

However, there may be some certain limitations related to this situation. The ease and convenience that phones allow in answering calls whenever creates some degree of distance among people, especially strangers. Increasing number of people are constantly involved with calls on their phones and do not engage in conversation with people around them.  For example, young people make phone calls to their friends and don’t participate in conversing ( if you converse with someone, you talk to them) within a social group outside of their friend circle, which may result in the scenario that the younger generation can become anti-social (unwilling to meet and be friendly with other people).

In conclusion, I opine (to opine means to express your opinion) that this new era of phones and their function of taking and making phone calls for diverse personal and social reasons anytime presents more advantages than disadvantage.
