IELTS Writing Task 2 Topic:

The crime rate will fall as advances in technology make it easier to detect and prevent crimes. Do you agree or disagree?

Sample Essay Band 8+

Due to the technological advancements that assist in the reduction of crime quickly, there has been a drastic ( severe and sudden, extreme) reduction in crime incidence compared to the past. In my opinion, I totally agree with this.

Data mapping (the process of matching fields from one database to another) is not a novel (=new) method in crime prevention. In fact, criminal justice professionals are data mapping now, providing police departments as well as federal agencies with a clear geographical look at the types of crime and the volume of crime that happens in an area. This is beneficial to law enforcement (the police or other officials who catch criminals or stop crime) because it shows trends that may be able to be traced back to ( to discover the point of origin of someone or sth) certain locations; drug rings (a group of people engaged in trafficking illegal drugs) are a prime (=main and most important) example of how data mapping can be useful to the police.  It  also  helps  the  police  pinpoint (=to find out or say the exact position of sth) problems  in  a community and allows them to strategize effectively to help reduce crime.

Smartphone tracking is another technology utilized by law enforcement, as its ability to track a criminal (=someone who commits a crime) through the use of their smartphone is incredible (extremely good or impossible to believe). This technology, when accessed through legal channels, can provide  law enforcement with a clear picture of a suspect‘s (= a person believed to done sth wrong or have committed a crime)  movements before, during, and after a crime. For those innocent of (=not guilty) the crime they are accused of, the technology can save them from a criminal trial; for those who are guilty, the tracking capability of this common object can seal their fate ( = to confirm that a particular unpleasant thing will happen).

Social media also  has had a large impact on law enforcement. Many law enforcement agencies and police departments have dedicated social media accounts on various platforms, enabling them to engage with their communities and act on tips in real time. This has become invaluable for solving crimes because it enables the police or other law enforcement to get up-to-the-minute (the latest and most updated) information on an ongoing crime or a recent crime simply by paying attention to their social media feeds. It is also useful for gauging (to calculate an amount) how a community feels about  their  interactions  with  the  police;  it  is  now  clear  that  having  direct communication with the police via social media can decrease the crime rate and make the people have a stronger belief in the police and other officials.

In conclusion, I opine that with the breakthrough in technology like data mapping, smartphone tracking, social media, the decreasing rate of crime is inevitable (unavoidable).
