IELTS Writing Task 2 in August 2021

People have to spend more and more time away from their home. What are the reasons? What are the effects of this?

BAND 8 SAMPLE

Today people often set aside less and less time for their family members. This trend stems from some reasons and it has exerted visible negative impacts on individuals and society.

As for the reasons, modernization and globalization mean that population mobility is being increasingly high, especially for major study/work purposes. Many students from provincial regions relocate to urban areas, far away from their hometown, to enroll at university or college in the hope that they would secure a better career later on in their life. Also, many workers are willing to break away from their dearest ones to work in  far-flung locations, as they have no other alternative.  The second culprit is the dramatic shift in local cultures. Younger people no longer cling onto their families and follow the individualistic culture and they start living independently, which is caused by the assimilation of Western culture.

Turning to the effects of this trend, on the societal level, the family structure is on the verge of collapse. Gone are the days when family members gathered for dinner with each other, and instead people now just drift apart from their own nest, pursuing their personal interests. Gradually, the bond is broken, leading to family breakdown and other undesirable consequences like domestic violence or conflicts. This somehow affects the social fabric, resulting in social disorder and instability. On the individual level, without the constructive help from families, youngsters in particular are likely to become aggressive, rebellious and ruthless adults.

In conclusion, some reasons are to blame for the declining amount of time family members spend with each other, and I think that this trend is likely to affect society as a whole.
