IELTS Speaking Part 1 Questions – Topic: Pen or pencil
- Do you usually use a pen or pencil?
Well to be honest, I don’t really use either of them partly because I have cursive writing.
If I want to jot something down (write something), I will use my laptop or my phone, which is more convenient.
- When was the last time you bought a pen or pencil?
Probably a few months ago when I had to sit my final exam. I bought a handful of (a small number of people or things) pencils because I was anxious that I may break one or two during the exam. It’s better safe than sorry (it is wise to be careful rather than be careless), you know.

- Which one do you use more often? Pen or pencil?
I think I would prefer the former (the first of two people, things, or groups previously mentioned) because if I make any slip-up (mistake), I can erase it easily. I am particularly into graphite (a soft, dark grey form of carbon, used in the middle of pencils) pencils as they help my handwriting more legible (legible writing or print can be read easily) and they don’t get blunt (A blunt pencil is not sharp and not able to write well) easily.
- What do you think when someone gives you a pen or a pencil as a gift?
I would definitely express my gratitude to the gift giver. I believe that it’s the thought that counts (used to say that good intentions are the most important thing, even if what you give someone is not perfect), not the gifts value. So doesn’t matter what they give me, I will always treasure it.
