Band 8 Model Answer
Well, I don’t really want to sound pretentious but I am kind of altruistic (selfless) so I hardly refuse to help others, especially those are close to me.
So a few months ago, we had a very important exam to sit and one of my friends found himself in a predicament (difficult situation) since he absolutely had no idea what to prepare for the exam. So he asked me to give him a steer (advice) since I had a good command (deep knowledge about sth) of the subject, Phonetics – for your information.
So I offered to tutor him every day after university with an aim to helping him gain a better insight into the subject and to have better preparations for the exam. It was kinda strenuous (stressed) actually since I had to walk him through some phonetic principles like why some vowels are nasalized or shortened in some cases. Not only that, I also showed him how to use some advanced vocabulary spontaneously and naturally to impress the teacher and it went pretty well. My friend took in the knowledge very quickly which really made me think that he had a knack for languages (have ability to do something)
Anyway, we eventually did the test and we both passed the exam with flying colours (well/successfully). Needless to say, my friend was over the moon (extremely happy). Actually, I didn’t expect any kind of reciprocation (a return in kind or of like value) when I offer to help him, but he took me out for dinner as a way express his gratitude and appreciation. He also said that hadn’t I offered to help him, he would have never achieved such a high score in the exam. So I was really proud of it.
