Ever since I was a small child, I have listened to music. In particular, I have always liked to listen to music that is sung in English. It has a different sound, and offers me an opportunity to study the English language. One song that has impressed me greatly is Bob Marley’s ‘No Woman, No Cry’. Bob Marley came from the island nation of Jamaica, in the Caribbean Sea, just south of the United States. Jamaica is a poor country, but a popular vacation destination. It is also the source of a world-famous style of music called reggae. Bob Marley is the most famous reggae musician, and the song ‘No Woman, No Cry’ is one of his most popular hits. It is a simple song that tells the story in difficult times, but keeps repeating the message, ‘Everything’s gonna be alright’. The words, the rhythm of the song, and Bob Marley’s voice make the experience of listening to it very inspirational and I am impressed by how I always feel better after I finish listening to it. Because the song is sung in English, it gives me the chance to learn new words and different word usages. For example, I recognize that even though the title of this song is not correct grammatically, it still delivers a powerful message that even though life can be difficult, you shouldn’t worry, and you don’t need to cry. That impresses me very much.

1) What type of songs is the most popular among today’s young people in your country?
Well, I think two types of songs are very popular among the young people in my country. What I want to mention firstly is some; pop songs on the Internet. With the development of the Internet, many Internet singers like updating some songs with simple tunes and funny lyrics on the Internet, some of which may become famous overnight. Since most of the young people are interested in the latest new things, they may be attracted by those Internet songs immediately. Secondly, most of the young people are interested in rap and hip-hop. Currently, the word’ freestyle’ is very popular among the public, which can be fully reflected in the rap and hip-hope. Moreover, the lyrics of those songs are very optimistic and they are lively-paced, so I think the young people like the Internet songs, the rap and the hip-hop.
2) Why do you think pop music is so popular?
Well, there are several reasons. What I want to mention firstly is that the lyrics of the pop music is very interesting and encouraging. Here, I would like to take a popular song named ‘snail’ for an example. I really love the lyrics of this song, and one of my favorite sentences is ‘ I want to climb up step by step, until to the top. Although I can only see a small sky, I have a big dream’. The lyric tells the young people that if they insist on fighting for their dreams, they will definitely succeed in the end. I think the lyric teaches me to be optimistic when facing the difficulties and challenges. Secondly, the singers 0: the pop music are the red idols. Currently, the young girls like handsome idols, and the young boys like beautiful idols. In this case, when those idols publish an album, the young people will definitely download the music, which makes the music so popular.
3) What kinds of songs do elders prefer?
Well, I think it depends. As for some quiet elder people, they prefer some old and soft music. For those people, since they are not as energetic as the young people, they prefer to stay at home and listen to the old music during the free time. The think the old music makes them feel comfortable, and can easily remind them of the things happened in the past. As for some active elder people, they prefer to listen to some fast-paced pop music. For this group of people, they believe that they should keep pace with the time even though they are old. So, they like communicating with the young people and are willing to learn about the pop culture. So, they prefer the fast-paced pop music.
4) Why is square dancing music so loud?
Well, there are many reasons. What I want to mention firstly is that the loud music can encourage people to be more energetic. Actually, the atmosphere plays an important role in square dancing. In order to create a lively atmosphere as well as to encourage more people engaged, people will always play the square dance music loudly. Secondly, the loud music can help the dancers to grasp the rhythm correctly. Generally speaking, the participants of the square dancing are the old people. Since some of them may slightly deaf, playing the square dance music loudly can let them hear the music clearly and get the rhythm correctly.
5) Has your preference in music changed over the years?
Well, my preference in music has changed over years. When I was a little girl, I preferred the music in the cartoons. For example, I really liked a Japanese cartoon named ‘Doraemon’ at that time, so my favorite music was the theme song of this cartoon. When I grew older, I became interested in the pop music from some famous idols, like X, Y, Z. I remembered clearly that I was deeply attracted by a rap named ‘Nun Chucks’ at that time, since I thought it was really cool for me to sing a song in an extremely fast speed. Nowadays, I prefer some soft piano music. Since I always feel anxious when facing the heavy study pressure, the soft piano music can help me relax my brain.
