Model Answers for IELTS Speaking Part 1 – Topic: Painting

1. Have you ever learned to draw (or paint)?
(Answer) Well, I have not had the chance to learn to draw professionally, but if given enough time, I would love to try.

2. Do you like drawing/ or painting?
(Answer) Yes, drawing is one of my favorite pastimes.
(Give a reason for your answer) I also sketch in search of peace. It calms my mind and makes me a better human. Some people feel most at ease when drawing. It is often used for therapy and stress relief. Creating something from nothing also makes us feel productive, and that helps us feel good about ourselves.

3. Did you like drawing/ or painting when you were a child (Why/ Why not)?
(Answer) To the best of my memory, I have enjoyed drawing since I was 5. (Give a reason for your answer) I realized that I was gifted at drawing quite early, and I like the sense of achievement when I accomplish some work. Though I am an amateur drawer, I am sensible in the color I use in painting. I like to use striking and varied colors and tools to draw, such as color pencils and water colors.

4. Do you ever paint pictures?
(Answer) Well, of course. There are many of my paintings that I take pride in. (Give a reason for your answer) I’ve drawn portraits of my friends, of strangers. I’ve painted landscapes I’ve seen, and landscapes that never existed. Also, I can draw my idols by myself, which makes me completely satisfied. Seeing my idol appearing under my pen slowly, I can depict the eyes, nose and mouth in their face.

5. What do you think are some of the benefits for children from drawing (or painting)?
(Answer) There are obvious benefits of drawing that children can get. (Give a reason for your answer) It allows them to express themselves, especially when they can’t express their feelings through words, which can be very frustrating. The visual imagery that children acquire through drawing is vital to their later understanding of subjects such as geography and math. Without an ability to map components or make sense of symbols, children’s development in these areas is likely to be severely restricted.

6. What is the difference between an adult and a child learning to draw?
(Give a reason for your answer) An adult has greater freedom and intellect. They can choose, access, and comprehend a larger volume of learning material. They can take classes at night and purchase drawing books for themselves. Meanwhile, when drawing, a child hardly uses logic and visual pre-concepts but relies on his or her own creativity and imagination.
