IELTS Speaking Part 2 Answer by IELTS test taker

Last December, I planned a surprise party for my roommate’s Kathy’s birthday. One month before her birthday, I generated a group of friends to discuss how to secretly set the scene, which cake shop should we choose and so on. After a heated and productive discussion, we made a detailed plan. In front of Kathy, we deliberately kept our mouth shut, never mentioning a word about her birthday. When the day finally came, two of us were sent to distract Kathy’s attention so as to make sure she wouldn’t come back to the dormitory. The rest of us began to decorate the dorm with balloons and candles. Within two hours, the original tedious room turned into a glamorous place for partying. As the clock struck 8, lights were turned off, candles were lighted. When Kathy opened the door, all of US shouted ‘Happy birthday, Kathy!’ Jaw dropped, tear wetted her eyes. Kathy was totally speechless.

This was definitely a special experience for me. Firstly, this was actually the first time I spent so many efforts on somebody else’s birthday. I used to think there was no need to celebrate anything. But I changed my thought because I want to give Kathy a sweet memory. Secondly, planning the whole event together with my friends firms our friendship. With their company, even the most boring task can be interesting. Maybe I should be the one to be grateful about this event.

IELTS Speaking Part 3

1) What do children often do in a birthday party?

Well, I think the children often do many things in a birthday party. What I want to mention firstly is that they like having a big meal at the party. When it comes to a child’s birthday party, his parents will always prepare variety kinds of snacks to the children, in which case the children can eat many candies, biscuits, ice-creams at that time. Secondly, the children enjoy playing games with their friends in a party. In order to make the children feel excited, the parents will always design many games and activities on their children’s birthday parties and it will also leave a deep impression to other guests. So the children can always play different kinds of interesting games with their peers on the birthday party.

2)    What do adults do at parties?

Well, I think the adults have many things to do at parties. Firstly, if the adult has taken the children to the party, he will not only need to guarantee the safety of the children but will also keep reminding the children to pay attention to their behaviors and leave a good impression to the owner of the party. Secondly, I think the adult will always try to broaden his social circle at parties. For example, in a business party, the adults will always meet with many people from different working fields and social backgrounds. In this case, communicating with the people they meet in the party is a good chance for the adult to know more people and it will be beneficial to his future career.

3)    Do people in your country like to hold parties?

Well, I think it depends. As for the young people, they like to hold parties, since they think it is a good chance for them to enhance the friendship, alleviate the heavy working pressure as well as to broaden the social circle. However, as for the middle-aged people and the old people, they may think holding a party is too complicated, since they need to prepare; many things, like the music, the wine, the food and so on. In this case, they prefer to stay at home and accompany their families quietly, instead of holding a noisy party during the free time.

4)    Should parents spend a lot of money on their children’s birthday parties?

Well, I do not think so. What I want to mention firstly is that holding an expensive birthday party may set a bad example to the children. I always believe that saving money is a good traditional virtue, and the parents should teach the children how to develop a good habit in spending money. If the parents spend a lot of money on their children’s birthday party, the children may think that spending a lot of money on a party is not a big deal, and they may even spend more money on the next birthday party. In the run, it is not beneficial to the growth of children. Secondly, I think the parents should spend the money on something more meaningful. To be honest, a birthday party is only a way of entertainment, and there is no need for the parents to spend such an amount of money on the entertainment. According to my perspective, the parents should spend money on something more meaningful, like helping the people in need and so on. So, I do not think the parents should spend a lot of money on their children’s birthday parties.

5)    Do you think people can make more friends if they often attend parties?

Yes, I think so. Attending parties is a good way to broaden the social circle. Here, I would like to take the business party for an example. On a business party, people can always see many businessmen from different fields and social backgrounds. In this case, if you are in a business party, it will be very easy for you to communicate with a successful businessman and you may also take this opportunity to learn some business experiences from those successful people. So, I think people carp often make new friends and broaden their social circles if they often attend parties.
