Sample Answers for IELTS Speaking Part 1 Topic and Questions: Plants

1. Do you like plants?

Frankly speaking, I’m quite drawn by (be attracted by sth or sb) plants and vegetation in general. I often find myself wandering about in the parks gazing aimlessly at the flowerbeds and enjoy the aroma (=strong and pleasant smell) that some beautiful flowers give off (produce heat/ smell, etc)

2. Do you think plants can be a good gift?

Definitely, plants usually feature in many occasions from casual birthdays to more formal dinners. It’s common to bring a bunch of newly picked flowers or a bouquet of flowers to the host family.

3. Can you grow plants? Do you know anything about growing a plant?

Sample Answer 1: I don’t have a knack for (have ability to do sth) gardening, so it’s quite over my head (beyond someone’s ability to understand) when it comes to growing certain types of plants. My mother often takes care of this instead.

Sample Answer 2: Well, people call me green-fingered ( good at growing plants). My granny maintained a big garden in her backyard, and I had a whale of time (to have a lot of fun) there during my holidays. I learnt the art of gardening from her. From planting seedlings, watering, and nurturing them with organic manure to pruning (trim (a tree, shrub, or bush) by cutting away dead or overgrown branches or stem) them, I learnt a great deal from her, and I’m on my own now. I have a big garden, and sometimes I help my friends to make one too.

4. Do you keep plants at home?

Sample Answer 1: Yes, I do. I mean I keep lily in my bedroom and I also plant some vegetables like cucumber, onions and tomatoes in the balcony. Now you can see everything covered in green.

Sample Answer 2: Yes, I’ve got some indoors and outdoors. One interesting plant I grow indoors is the Desert cacti. Though many abhor it, I decided to try my hands on. It required some research and little effort. I grew it in a pot and watered it whenever the soil began to dry. It did pay me off by blooming after three years. It was such a pleasure!

Did you grow any plants when you were young?

Yes. I helped my mum raise a bougainvillea. I enjoyed watering it, and we celebrated when it was in full bloom.
