IELTS Speaking Part 1 Topic & Questions: Discussion
- What do you like to talk about?
I am a chatty (talkative) person so I can pretty much talk about anything, but I am particularly into (like) discussing music as I am a guitar aficionado (someone who is very interested in something and knows a lot about it), as you can see here.
- Did you change the way you discussed when you were a child?
Of course, when I was little, I didn’t really get straight to the point (to reach the important part of something at once) when I talked about something. But as an adult, I don’t like to beat around the bush (to spend a long time getting to the main point of what you are saying) and I prefer to be more straightforward (clear and honest).
- Do you change your opinions frequently?
I don’t think that I am a flip-flopper (someone who changes plan suddenly), I usually stick to my opinions, maybe it sounds a bit negative but I am an adamant (unwilling to change an opinion or decision or impossible to persuade) person.

- What topics do you usually talk with your friends?
We have a lot of topics to chat about but to break the ice (to make people who have not met before feel more relaxed with each other), we usually start off with weather like how erratic the weather is or how scorching hot it has been and things like that. Then after that, we pretty much talk about anything.
- Are you more of a listener or a speaker?
I think I am more of a listener since I am kind of receptive (willing to listen to and accept new ideas and suggestions) and patience that are the most important quality traits (a particular characteristic) for a good listener. Besides, I never interrupt when others speak. So I think that is pretty good.
6. What are some key points to be a good listener?
Well if we want to listen to someone attentively ( giving careful attention or listening carefully), we have to put ourselves in the other person’s shoes (to imagine how someone else feels in a situation) so that you ‘understand’ their viewpoint better.
